ABSTRACT

A window is a breach in the enclosing skin of a building, an opening for the flows-

inward and outward-of heat, light and sound. It is often the element of a room that

influences the interior environment most. Good daylighting is only one of the criteria of

window design: for comfort there is also the need to control ventilation, noise

transmission, heat gain and loss by radiation and conduction; and crucial to the

architectural nature of the building may be the relationship between window, wall and

structure.
