ABSTRACT

The unfortunately frequent defacing graffiti and writings on the walls of buildings and monuments cause arduous maintenance problems; actually, the paints used to drow, usually contains polymeric binders which strongly adhere to the surface of stones, bricks, plasters, metals. To overcome this maintenance problem, the research has developed treatment systems suitable for cleaned surfaces which make writing more difficult and removing with solvent easier. These treatments consist of the application of a protective agent based on fluorinated polymers with specific properties; the research has developed film forming durable and non filming reversible protectives. Some of the products are extremely respectful of the aesthetic appearance of the treated surfaces; after heavy laboratory testing, they were employed upon ordinary and culturally valuable buildings. The present work reports the main achievements of the research and some example of the on-site application.
