ABSTRACT
To adopt “holistic taxonomic change,” “replacement of an ideal of natural order,” or “ideological upheaval” as a criterion of revolutionary status does violence to our preanalytic convictions. These proposed criteria are unsatisfactory. But even if there is no condition that is necessary or sufficient for a scientific revolution, it yet may be the case that there is a unique pattern of development displayed by revolutionary episodes.
