ABSTRACT

Observers of science have disagreed, as well, about the nature of the “goodness” that increases over time. The list of recommended candidates includes predictive success, convergence upon truth (Peirce, Popper), consilience (Whewell), reduction (Nagel), incorporation-with-corroborated-excess-content (Lakatos), asymptotic agreement of calculations (Bohr), and problem-solving effectiveness (Laudan).
