ABSTRACT
William Whewell was the first student of science to conduct a systematic investigation of the entire course of science from its inception to the time at which he was writing (1837). Whewell pursued the first approach to the interpretation of “theoretical progress.” He sought to identify the nature of this progress and to uncover the conditions that make it possible.
