ABSTRACT

Eglingham Church of England Aided First School, founded in 1868, serves a north Northumberland rural community that extends well beyond the village of Eglingham itself. The majority of pupils travel to school by car or taxi. The school’s 34 pupils are between the ages of 4 and 9 and are taught in two mixed-age classes. Class 1 includes Foundation Stage and Year 1 and Year 2 children of Key Stage 1. Class 2 comprises Year 3 and Year 4 children. The school has been known as a ‘Beacon School’ since 1998 and benefits from additional government funding to enable teachers to help other schools in the locality. Acting headteacher Dorothy Douglas explains that the school’s approach

to geography is thematic and is based on a two-year rolling programme that ensures all relevant aspects of the Foundation Stage and the Programme of Study for Geography are addressed. The school has a highly detailed, comprehensive and flexible set of documents that ensure adequate and appropriate coverage of geography at all levels and at every stage of planning, i.e. long-, medium-and short-term. Available space allows for only a ‘snapshot’ of this impressive range of documentation relating to policy, planning and implementation.
