ABSTRACT

While some of Sheffield Hallam’s suggestions for numeracy development through geography work are also suited to children working at Key Stage 2, we have inserted in italics some alternatives for younger children:

Children can also interpret data obtained from a variety of other sources such as:

travel brochures/WWW – data on weather/climate, costs of holidays and flights;

timetables; road atlases. Children can investigate numbers and shape in the local environment. Mathematical skills can also be developed in the context of mapwork, for example through work on co-ordinates, grid references, distance, direction and scale.
