ABSTRACT
In Amritsar, we began hunting for historical connections to Ladakh with confidence, being armed with many business names, addresses, and market locations from our documents. Our search was initially not fruitful. For a few days Nasir and I walked through the bazaar streets, stopping and asking older businessmen whether they had heard of any of these merchants, and receiving only negative replies.
