ABSTRACT

The struggle against the hegemony of television news by one brave mother, the heroine of chapter 7, was directed not only against the reality on screen but also its reception by her husband and her daughter in the living-room. The conversation of this one divided family reveals in some detail the everyday processes of viewers’ negotiating with television news. With the insights gained from this micro-view we now enlarge our scope to explore how television’s framing of the conflict is reflected and incorporated in the articulation of the two major ideological perspectives by 52 additional families.
