ABSTRACT

Rich in poetic language and sensuous imagery Their Eyes Were Watching God1 is primarily a novel about a woman who discovers her voice and identity over a fourteenyear period. The emerging identity of Janie Crawford is dramatically revealed through her relationships and experiences as a mulatto woman in the newly liberated South. Perhaps more than anything, Their Eyes is a story of self-discovery and resilience. Janie is afflicted by enormous suffering, injustice, and humiliation, yet she emerges selfpossessed, serene, and at peace with life.
