ABSTRACT

This chapter covers three factors that have a major influence on the ground rules for developing usable and useful instructions. One factor is the expected

mode of use

of the instructions. As a rule, the writer does not have access to relevant user information, such as level of experience, grade level equivalent for reading, etc. Even when market studies for the product are available, it is difficult to obtain such information about the users. Thus, it is useful to start with an expected mode of use of the instructions in the field.
