ABSTRACT

Nearly every research student, but especially those who undertake the dual challenge of studying in another country, will become frustrated with an apparent lack of progress at some time during their thesis. In this chapter we draw on the wisdom of ancient Chinese proverbs to guide candidates in developing a proper perspective for pursuing their thesis. While the lessons offered in this chapter originate from the Chinese culture, they have universal application for students involved in the challenging experience of completing a thesis, particularly in an environment and culture that is unfamiliar.
