ABSTRACT

Given that sustainability planning aims to bring about major changes in a range of areas, how can this be done? What methods might be particularly useful to planners, political leaders, or activists? Possible options include many traditional urban planning strategies – if handled in creative and proactive ways – as well as some new tools that have been developed particularly with sustainable development in mind, such as sustainability indicators and ecological footprint analysis. Educational and consensus-building processes, as well as old-fashioned political organizing and coalition-building, are also important.
