ABSTRACT
Every aspect of cell biology, from intermediate metabolism to protein synthesis to catabolism, requires the chemistry of bond forming and bond breaking reactions at various steps. The majority of these common chemical reactions, however, proceed at spontaneous rates that are too slow to support life. Hence, all living organisms rely on the catalytic power of enzymes to accelerate reaction rates, and thus sustain life.
