ABSTRACT
It is estimated that well over 1,000,000,000 people, approximately one-fifth of the earth’s population, are speakers of some form of Chinese. Genetically, Chinese is an independent branch of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages (see Chapter 41). Within the Chinese branch, there are a number of dialects, which can be classified into a minimum of five groups on the basis of their structural affinities.
