ABSTRACT
Sulfate attack is the term used to describe a series of chemical reactions between sulfate ions and the components of hardened concrete, principally the cement paste, caused by exposure of concrete to sulfates and moisture. As is the case with other aggressive chemicals, sulfates are potentially most deleterious to concrete when present in gaseous or liquid form, the latter situation being the most common; attack by solid sulfate-containing chemicals is rare.
