ABSTRACT

Workplace health in Europe is beginning a new era. At the end of the twentieth century, the issue of stress has become a major concern inside and out of the workplace. The now recognised total workload that people undertake in the private and public domain has resulted from the pressures of work, increased insecurity, short term contracts, commuting, restricted childcare provision and the recognition of unemployment of a partner have all formed part of the circle in which health figures greatly. However, progress has been made in legislation to protect both employee and employer, and the issue of health promotion at work is becoming a common feature, supported by governments and health professionals alike. Occupational health services too, are on the verge of change as there is now enough evidence to indicate activities in such a service coming closer to the health promoting philosophy.
