ABSTRACT
If you have no coal to dig, then what need is there for miners? If you have no pupils, what can teachers do? If you want to manufacture motor cars you must have the bits out of which to make them. And if you have no history, then historians become redundant also. Workers need a constant supply of raw material. But historians have always thought themselves a privileged group. After all, what is more predictable than a continuing supply of history?
