ABSTRACT
In gel filtration molecules separate according to size as they pass through the column. They are separated due to the varying degree of steric exclusion from the pores of the packing material. The pores within the beads are such that not the whole pore volume is accessible for large molecules, while smaller molecules can penetrate into all pores. Accordingly, larger molecules elute earlier than smaller ones in gel filtration.
