ABSTRACT
Horace Walpole’s present status rests primarily on his skill as a letter-writer. While some twentieth-century critics have focused on the influence Walpole and The Castle of Otranto had on the emerging gothic genre, the majority of critical works concerning Walpole concentrate accordingly on his status as the premier and most proficient letterand memoir-writer in the English language.
