ABSTRACT

British Suffragists Bullock, Ian, and Richard Pankhurst (eds.), Sylvia Pankhurst: From Artist to Anti-Fascist, London:

Martin’s Press, and London: UCL, 1996 Emmeline, Christabel, and Sylvia Pankhurst are best known for their involvement in the struggle for women’s suffrage in Britain. Much of the literature on the Pankhurst women concentrates on this part of their lives. Yet, after suffrage, each of them focused on different political activities. For example, Emmeline and Christabel ran for Parliament, Christabel became religious and lectured on the apocalypse, and Sylvia supported the Russian Revolution and Ethiopian independence. While the chosen works do focus on the Pankhursts’ political activities beyond suffrage, more has been written about Sylvia, most likely because her interests were not only more diverse but more successful. Books about

them reflect conflicting portraits of these three women, as well as speculation about their sexualities. The main consen sus on the Pankhursts is that in terms of their political ideals, they were dedicated and determined women, each demonstrating capable leadership.
