ABSTRACT

A number of plant extracts and other natural substances have hepatoprotective activity. Some crude drugs used in the indigenous systems of medicine are also believed to be effective against hepatitis. Various assays have been devised to examine crude drugs and pure natural products for hepatoprotective activity. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a strongly hepatotoxic agent and it is therefore used to induce cytotoxicity in primary cultured hepatocytes in order to monitor liver protective effects of various natural substances (Kiso et al., 1983).
