ABSTRACT

To become a membrane glycoprotein, a protein, after its birth in the ribosomal machinery, will have to fulfill three different requirements:

The purpose of this chapter is to give the basic knowledge on biosynthesis of glycoproteins in order to appreciate how the glycoproteins are correctly synthesized in order to play their roles at the surface in cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion, and to understand their relevance to pathology and therapeutical aspects.
