ABSTRACT
Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a heterogenous disease with multiple etiologies. The development of diabetes characterized by hyperglycemia, insulin resistance in peripheral tissues and impaired insulin secretion to glucose is caused by genetic and environmental factors. A series of studies using KK mice has clearly pointed out that the close interaction of genetic and environmental factors such as diet and obesity plays an important role in the development of diabetes.
