ABSTRACT
Rock types generally can be grouped according to characteristics such as resistance to erosion, color, cross-sectional shape of gullies and valleys, vegetation cover, etc. It is often helpful to know if banding is a result of metamorphism or sedimentary layering, or whether the surface is sandstone or limestone. Although one generally can not identify the surface units, it is usually possible to group them into recognizable categories.
