ABSTRACT
Many versions of the story use neither Potter’s own words or Potter’s own pictures. What is it about these books that makes us call them Peter Rabbit at all?
In contrast to some of the precedents in other children’s classics (I am thinking of Disney’s Pooh and also of the television version of The Wind in the Willows featuring animated puppets), Peter Rabbit, for the most part, lives a fairly limited and restrained life, largely confined to the limits of Potter’s original plot. Certainly most of the retellings do not venture far beyond the parameters of the original, either verbally or pictorially.
