ABSTRACT

The method of proof by induction may be unfamiliar to some readers. It is often used to prove that a series of statements are true. I use this method in Chapter 11, for example, to show that a certain set of equations that contain an integer parameter k are all true. Because the method of proof by induction can seem to be obscure-it may look like we are claiming to prove the truth of a statement by simply assuming that it is so-I shall give a short explanation here.
