ABSTRACT
Squamous carcinomas of the floor of the mouth pose different surgical problems depending on whether they arise laterally or anteriorly. Lateral tumours arise commonly in close proximity to the opening of the submandibular duct. Anterior tumours lead to a severe functional and cosmetic deficit if excised without appropriate reconstruction (‘Andy Gump’ deformity).
