ABSTRACT

Facial asymmetry can arise owing to hemi-hyperplasia or hypoplasia of growth centre tissues during the early years of life. It may be gross and rapidly progressive or slow and not striking in its aesthetic effects. All congenital growth disturbances should cease by the end of adolescence and if possible surgery should be delayed until this point. Very obvious, rapidly progressive lesions or those causing marked psychosocial distress should be considered for earlier surgery.
