ABSTRACT

Trauma involving the osteogenic centre can result in growth disturbance, hemifacial asymmetry, ankylosis and severe psychological disturbance. Early childhood and adolescence are important periods, as, in the first, taunts and verbal cruelty from peers are common and, during the latter, heightened sensitivity and self-awareness coupled with perceptions of deteriorating aesthetics during the years of normal facial growth may severely impair normal psychological maturation.
