ABSTRACT

Digit sucking in children is common and particularly damaging to the developing occlusion. Early cessation of such childhood habits will usually allow the anterior teeth to correct a degree of open bite. Prolongation of the habit may result in severe, potentially irreversible derangement of dental occlusion. Treatment to make the digit unpleasant tasting or ‘gate appliances’ to prevent ready access to the mouth have all proved of mixed benefit.
