ABSTRACT

In the presence of oro-facial malignancy, palpable cervical nodes should be considered for neck dissection. Careful orientation of the operative specimen for the histopathologist permits accurate description and location of the nodes containing the tumour and those demonstrating inflammatory reactivity. Decisions regarding the patient’s need for postoperative radiotherapy are guided by histological evidence of tumour spread to the nodes and in particular to the extracapsular tissues.
