ABSTRACT

One of the most versatile mandibular ramus operations, the sagittal split mandibular ramus osteotomy allows both forward and backward movement of the mandibular dentition and a measure of rotation with respect to the maxillary teeth. It is not a good operation for treatment of anterior open bite unless a simultaneous maxillary osteotomy is planned in conjunction. It is very easy to introduce unplanned rotations in the occlusal plane and the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle is at risk of damage.
