ABSTRACT
The indications for thyroidectomy are tumour, failed medical therapy for benign goitre and for cosmetics in patients concerned about an enlarged but nonfunctional thyroid gland. Complete thyroidectomy is rarely required and commits the patient to lifelong oral thyroxine replacement therapy.
