ABSTRACT
China has a long, continuous, and substantial urban tradition. Its first walled settlements can be dated back almost 4,000 years, and its largest cities were until the 19th century almost always among the world’s largest. It is estimated that prior to 1800 over one-third of the population that had lived in cities lived in China.
