ABSTRACT
The history of illegitimacy plays a significant role in social history in two respects. First, its definition reveals much about standards applied to sexuality, marriage, and gender. Second, where known, actual rates of illegitimacy help social historians understand varieties and changes in sexual behavior. Some of the most important debates over modern sexuality have been associated with the interpretation of changes in illegitimate birthrates.
