ABSTRACT

Older patients are frequently excluded from clinical studies evaluating coronary revascularization techniques. Percutaneous intervention seems to be an appealing approach for these patients, by minimizing the risk of procedurerelated complications compared to more aggressive treatment modalities (e.g. surgery). Moreover, a therapeutic strategy capable of reducing the need for future revascularization is ideal, as quality of life and symptom relief might be key issues for patients of extreme age. This chapter evaluates the short-and mid-term outcomes of elderly (> 80 years) patients treated with unrestrictive utilization of sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) in the RESEARCH study.
