Vivas – oral exams
Pages 4

Viva voce exams have long been used to add to or consolidate the results of other forms of assessment. In many countries, oral exams of one kind or another play a much more important part in higher education assessment than in the United Kingdom. Such exams normally take the form of a ‘defence’ of an argument, where students are interrogated by one or more examiners about selected parts of work they have had assessed in other ways. Such exams are often used to make decisions about the classification of degree candidates whose work straddles borderlines.
