Students invest a great deal of time and energy in producing dissertations and theses, usually in their final year. Sometimes these arise from the results of their project work. We therefore owe it to them to mark them fairly and appropriately. Moreover, these forms of assessment extend to postgraduate work, where the validity, reliability and transparency of our assessment become even more critical, as then dissertations or theses are usually the most important assessed elements of students’ achievement.
