An Indian anthropology?: what kind of object is it?

As one of the three anthropologists from Delhi University studying Dutch society, I was often asked whether there was anything “Indian” about my disciplinary perspective. While being personally irritated by the naive condescension implicit in this question, I still find it important to address precisely because of the assumptions that it reveals about anthropology itself.
