ABSTRACT

In Europe it is well known that migration and flight cause psychological strains. After World War II tens of millions of expellees, refugees, and emigrants came to Western Europe. Today, still, war and persecution continue to cause great suffering for children and families. In 2001 UNICEF counted 35 million refugees worldwide, 80% of them women and children. In the decade from 1990 to 2000, 2 million children lost their lives in armed conflicts, 6 million were injured or mutilated for life, 1 million were orphaned, and 12 million lost their homes (German Committee for UNICEF, 2001).
