ABSTRACT
During most of the nineteenth century rich American men went
to Paris and Florence to purchase works of art. Their daughters
and wives bought the season’s haute couture on the fashionable
streets of Paris. The scholars who went to Harvard and Yale to
study later left for universities in Germany and England.
