ABSTRACT

China’s reform originated directly from the comprehensive negation of the Cultural Revolution. With this as the turning point, the Party reflected on and comprehensively re-evaluated the theory and practice of the Mao Zedong era. The rejection of the mass political campaigns that reached a peak with the Cultural Revolution has had two direct consequences. The first is that the Party has learned the importance of strengthening democracy from within the Party and improving the legal system; the second is that it has decided to switch the focus of its work from ideological and political struggles to the economy, raising the slogan of building a socialist and powerful country through the modernization of industry, agriculture, science and technology, and national defense.
