ABSTRACT

Shampoo is a cleanser designed to remove sebum, eccrine sweat, apocrine sweat, fungal elements, desquamated corneocytes, styling products, and environmental dirt from the scalp and hair1 (Figures 2.1 and 2.2). The main purpose of a shampoo is to cleanse the scalp, but most patients would disagree, stating that the purpose of shampoo is to beautify the hair. This perception that a shampoo can impart cosmetic value to nonliving hair shafts has led to the tremendous plethora of shampoos on the market today.2 This section delves into the formulation, efficacy, and variety of liquid mass-market shampoos.
