ABSTRACT

Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, author of The Good Housekeeper: or the Way to Live Well and to Be Well While We Live (1839), influenced the domestic tastes and tenets of American women for a half century. She was born on October 24, 1788, in Newport, New Hampshire. Her older brother Horatio assisted her home education by sharing his notes and texts from Dartmouth. Before her marriage, she taught at a private school and assisted the innkeeper at the Rising Sun, a Newport hostel.
