ABSTRACT

Eating disorders (ED) are notoriously difficult to treat. As the previous chapter indicated, across the developed world there are large numbers of people, especially women, who are suffering from these disorders. In many cases they are receiving treatment that is not proving effective. How does one define effectiveness when it comes to treatment of ED? There is considerable research evaluating various approaches to therapy on the basis of follow-ups 6 weeks or even 6 months after the conclusion of therapy. The question is, do the changes hold in the long term?
