ABSTRACT
Under Simon, the rule of the Maccabee family had stabilized both internally and externally. When the second generation came to power in the person of his son and heir, John Hyrcanus, the dynastic principle found full expression. From this point on, it is appropriate to speak of a “Hasmonean dynasty”1 in the narrower sense.
