ABSTRACT
Early attempts to explain motivation employed the concept of instincts based on the evolutionary ideas of Darwin. Over time, as vast lists of many thousands of basic instincts were produced, it became clear that instinct, as a concept, had lost explanatory power. Instinct cannot explain cultural differences in behavior and motivation. When its limitations became apparent, psychologists turned to drive reduction theory.
