Suppose that capitalism develops through different stages, and that by empire we mean the current stage of global capitalist expansion. How then should we conceptualize the relationship between the periodization of capitalist development and the strategies of resistance? Should we, in other words, periodize or historicize our strategies in the same way we periodize the dynamics of capitalist development so as to identify a strategy of resistance that is adequate to this particular stage of capitalist development?1
