With the unparalleled military and economic power of the U.S. in the post-Cold War era of globalization, the relationship between imperialism and capitalism that has long been of concern to both scholars and activists has come under renewed scrutiny. Indeed, Lenin argued that imperialism was inseparably bound to capitalism and, in fact, was capitalism’s highest stage, today scholars recognize imperialism as more than merely a stage of capitalism. As the contributors to a recent issue of the Monthly Review argue, imperialism has been inherent to the history of capitalism from the start.1
